I retained JWH, LCSW PLLC to conduct an urgent assessment of shelter program staff and the quality and adequacy of contractually-required social services across 28 shelter sites and nearly 500 employees as part of a court-ordered transition and wind-down plan for this troubled nonprofit organization. In addition to the assessment, Jahmani was retained to deliver detailed recommendations for improvement and advise on an implementation plan. Having previously served as Jahmani’s supervisor in a large NYC government human services agency, I recognized that he had the necessary depth of knowledge and skills to quickly get to work and deliver a thoughtful and thorough assessment together with a complete set of recommendations, all of which he accomplished in three weeks. Jahmani developed a staff assessment questionnaire; met with staff and directors (1:1 and small groups) across the agency; and delivered a report that noted what is working well, and the challenges, barriers, and areas to improve. In my role as the court-appointed receiver, Jahmani’s report was shared with the court as well as the funder, a New York City government human services agency, which found it to be concise and instructive. We then promptly moved to implement his recommendations, which had a positive and demonstrable impact on the quality of services delivered to the unhoused families being served.
